Oaxaca, Mexico: An Expatriate Life

The Poetry of Rodrigo Villegas

Upon Registering at the Nord Hotel in Bucharest

Writing my biography on the hotel register
Painstakngly slow which is my custom
A Romanian voyeur swooped to my side
Tracing his contempt
In an understandable English

"Is that how people write in America?"
"In Romania", he went on "We are taught to write quite rapidly"

"No sir," was my reply
"Most Americans don't write as slow as I
Most Americans write very fast
But you won't find too many of them
'Cause the brighter type Americans
Don't come to Romania
They all go to Paris"

I started to leave
But turned to him again and said
"I misspell a lot of words, too."
