Oaxaca, Mexico: An Expatriate Life

The Poetry of Rodrigo Villegas

The Visitor

He baked a chocolate cake
And cut a pattern
So as to make a shirt
He put down his croche
And slammed the shutters tight
We laughed and laughed away
This strange bird of the night

Each day he worked upon a boat he built
Bathed in alabaster white
And then one night
He packed his things
And sailed way out of sight
We laughed and laughed again
We did
This strange bird in its flight
How little did we know right then
The rains would seep to flow
My friends
To one horrendous Height
